SBGRC Activities
for you and your Golden Retriever
Field
The Golden Retriever's original purpose was to find and bring back
downed game birds. To keep that heritage alive and keep the "retriever"
in the Golden Retriever, SBGRC holds the following activities:
- An annual AKC Hunting Test, with
stakes at the Junior, Senior, and Master levels
- An annual GRCA Working Certificate
and Working Certificate Excellent test, together with puppy and
singles stakes
- Field training sessions are held
regularly from spring through fall
- An annual fun field trial is held
in October
All of our field activities are
structured to benefit beginners as well as advanced handlers. We
strongly encourage new people to attend our field programs. Workshops
and/or seminars are held periodically.
Conformation, Obedience, & Agility
The breed ring, obedience trials and agility trials are three other areas where Golden
Retrievers and our members excel. For those interested, the club offers
the following:
- An annual sanctioned breed and
obedience match
- Supported entries at all-breed
shows
- Obedience run-throughs and informal
obedience work at some club events
- Agility workshops, matches, and AKC
Agility trials
Community Activities and Public
Service
SBGRC is interested in community service and promoting responsible dog
ownership. To that end, the club:
- Has held a Golden Fun Day, with
demonstrations of field, obedience, grooming, show ring handling,
search and rescue and agility, Golden Olympics and a Children's
Parade
- Sponsors an annual public education
booth at the Eastern States Exposition every September, with
members' dogs on display and literature on all aspects of dog
ownership available to the public
- Hosts workshops and special
programs informing our members and other interested parties about
health related issues, search and rescue programs, as well as how to
get started in field work, agility, or tracking
- Sponsors health clinics (eye,
heart) to screen dogs for genetic problems
Other Activities and Benefits of
Membership
Board Meetings (open to all members) as well as General Membership
Meetings are regularly scheduled. General Membership meetings are often
scheduled in conjunction with a club activity. Meetings may also include
a guest speaker or special educational program of interest to Golden
Fanciers.
One of the highlights of the year is our Annual Meeting where dogs
earning titles during the preceding year are awarded rosettes, and dogs
who have met specified requirements are awarded the club's annual
trophies. The club has a total of 18 trophies that can be awarded each
year. Owners must satisfy an attendance and work requirement to receive
trophies and rosettes.
Members also receive our club newsletter.
A club column is published in the GRCA's Golden Retriever News, allowing
us to brag a little about our members' recent accomplishments!
A puppy referral service is provided to people looking for qualified
breeders, and a referral number is available through the AKC and GRCA.
All of these activities and events are made possible by the efforts and
dedication of our members. |
